”The Real Thing is so densely and entertainingly packed with wit, ideas and feelings that one visit just won’t do” – The NY Times
Late last year the world lost Tom Stoppard, celebrated as one of the most significant dramatists of the modern era. Known for his dazzling verbal wit, philosophical depth, and complex structural layers, his unique writing style earned the entry “Stoppardian” in the Oxford English Dictionary. Over a career spanning more than six decades, Stoppard received five Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards, and an Academy Award.
The Real Thing is widely considered one of Stoppard’s most enduring and personal comedies, trading some of his epic, multi-generational themes for a deeply intimate look at romantic relationships. It is also a love letter to words, and explores how language can mask genuine emotion, while simultaneously analyzing how political activism can sometimes value abstract ideology over individual human relationships.
It’s also very funny.
